VTU Grading Schemes (2018 vs 2021/22)
Passing Criteria (2022)
- Theory (SEE): Min 35% (e.g., 35/100 or 18/50).
- Aggregate: CIE + SEE must be β₯ 40%.
- Practical: Min 40% in exams.
Percentage Conversion
2021/2022 Scheme: Percentage = CGPA Γ 10
2015/2018 Scheme: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) Γ 10
VTU Academic Rules (FCD & Year Back)
π First Class with Distinction (FCD)
2021/22 Scheme: Typically CGPA β₯ 7.0 (70%).
2018 Scheme: Typically CGPA β₯ 7.75.
*Must pass all subjects in First Attempt.
π Year Back System
If you fail in more than 4 subjects in a specific academic year (Odd + Even sem combined), you may not be allowed to enter the next year (Vertical Progression rule).
π Activity Points
Apart from CGPA, you must earn 100 Activity Points (AICTE rule) through extracurriculars to be eligible for the degree.
Frequently Asked Questions (VTU)
Calculation & Formulas (2021 vs 2018)
What is the formula to convert VTU CGPA to Percentage?
It strictly depends on your scheme:
β’ 2021 & 2022 Scheme: Formula is simple: CGPA Γ
10 (e.g., 8.2 CGPA = 82%).
β’ 2015 & 2018 Scheme: Formula is (CGPA - 0.75) Γ
10 (e.g., 8.2 CGPA = 74.5%).
Check your grade sheet or regulation book to confirm.
What is SGPA vs CGPA in VTU?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester based on credits and grades. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all semesters completed so far.
Distinction & Class Ranks
What is the CGPA required for First Class with Distinction (FCD)?
For the 2021 Scheme, FCD is usually awarded for CGPA β₯ 7.0 (70%). For the 2018 Scheme, it is CGPA β₯ 7.75. Crucially, you must clear all subjects in the first attempt within the course duration.
Can I get Distinction if I cleared an arrear?
Generally, no. First Class with Distinction is reserved for students who pass all subjects in their first attempt. However, you can still secure "First Class" if your CGPA meets the cutoff (e.g., β₯ 6.0/6.75) even with history of arrears.
Passing & Year Back System
What is the 'Year Back' rule in VTU?
The vertical progression rule states that to move to the next odd semester (e.g., 3rd to 5th), you must not have more than 4 backlogs from the previous two semesters combined. If you have >4 arrears, you face a 'Year Back' and cannot attend classes until you clear them.
What are the passing marks for 2021/22 Scheme?
You typically need 35% in SEE (Semester End Exam) and an aggregate (CIE + SEE) of 40% to pass a theory course. For practicals, the minimum is often higher (e.g., 40% in exams).
How does 'X' grade (Absent) affect CGPA?
An 'X' grade is treated as Absent/Provisional Fail. It carries 0 grade points, which drastically reduces your SGPA for that semester. You must re-register or appear for the exam to clear it.
General & Accuracy
Does this calculator support the 2022 Scheme?
Yes, the grade points (O=10, A+=9, etc.) are standard across CBCS schemes. The main difference is the percentage conversion, which is displayed as CGPA Γ 10 for the new scheme.
